The next update is on the horizon and it’s time to gather all important info in one place.
Make sure to check back here to see the latest info about the upcoming update for Clash of Clans. TELL YOUR FRIENDS
It’s difficult to see what’s coming considering Supercell doesn’t have a fixed schedule for their updates or a fixed roadmap for new features. They seem to work more or less with “it’s done when it’s done” (at least they stick with what they say it will be).
However, there is always update info that gets thrown out before the official announcement comes. This can include extractions from the game code, developer publications in the official forum, or from people who are under NDA with Supercell (some YouTubers, Forum Administrators or other people).
I’m not one of those, so I’m not bound to any regulations. I can post anything I want and that’s what I do.
I will always check any leak I find and if I see one that makes sense from a trustful source, I will immediately show it here – but also expect me to show fake leaks and tell you why they are fakes.
This update will be the BIGGEST Clash of Clans update ever! It will be released in May 2017 – Sneak Peeks very soon TELL YOUR FRIENDS
Clash of Clans May 2017 Update
Note: Due to many requests I switched the order from the bottom (old) to top (most recent). If you’re visiting this page for the first time and want to get the whole story, you’ll need to start from the bottom.
First Update Teaser (May 5th, 2017)
Ok we already heard that there won’t be traditional Sneak Peeks for this update (most likely), but there’s a first Teaser Trailer (well, actually the second when you count the one from the Broken Boat).
Unfortunately, it’s not telling that much so far, just about the boat will take us to a new world.
I heard that Supercell will release one of these trailers every 24 hours and that the real update will come in the week of May 15th (NOT confirmed! But I thought I mention it as this source has been doing good advice in the past). In this case I hope not, unless the next 9 Teasers will be a lot more interesting 🙁
Update Alert via SMS (May 5th, 2017)
Supercell just launched an update service for the upcoming update that will notify you once the update is live.
If you’re signing up there, you can also win Gems or a PEKKA statue as well.
If you want to enter, you can do it here.
Surprised that someone is still doing this these days, but the more interesting fact about it is, that this promotion is ending on May11th, 12pm. It could be possible that this is the time when Supercell ships the first part of the update.
I’m personally convinced that this update will contain multiple parts and not all of them will be released at the same time, but that’s just a feeling that I have.
Not Even Sneak Peeks? (May 5th, 2017)
Looks like we won’t see Sneak Peeks in the traditional way we’re used to according to the official forum post:
Broken Boat Event Coming? (May 4th, 2017)
The official update thread in the forum is about to reach 500 pages. It’s becoming very hard to keep up. Fadeyr just showed me that Lach, an official forum moderator and someone who already knows what this whole boat thing is about, just indicated that there’s a reason this broken boat is already in our village and it might just be there for hype.
The hype is already brewing. There are more than 20 million views on the official teaser on YouTube (so much for the topic rumors Clash of Clans is dead). BUT what will the next steps be and when will they take place?
The Youtubers are already in Finland again and took a trip on a boat yesterday. That’s no coincidence and you don’t need much imagination to see that something is in the works.
Back to the topic, Lachs’ comment really got me thinking. I believe the boat is not just there for the hype and I think Supercell might be planning some kind of big release event of the update.
My personal wish:
It also would be nice to see an event where all players around the world would need to gather a certain amount of Stars to unlock the boat globally with one-time special rewards and more.
Bottom line, it’s logical that Supercell wants to celebrate their biggest update ever with the biggest event and biggest hype ever.
Let the show begin, we’re ready for it 🙂
Broken Boat In Your Village (May 3rd, 2017)
You have to admit that Supercell always has a sense of humor. They let the broken boat appear in everyone’s village just an hour ago without any prior notice and it leads to the shipwreck trailer that got leaked yesterday.
Here’s how I earned more than 200,000 Gems without spending one single Dollar in the past 3 years!
The first in-game Sneak Peek and they are ABOAT (sorry for that one, couldn’t hold it) to hype us to the limit this time.
It’s getting more and more interesting and I’m aboat (ok this was the last one, promised!) to have a heart attack at this point.
I hope the “no Sneak Peeks this week” announcement in the official update sticky thread in the official forum on Monday was just a misdirect to lead us to believe they wouldn’t start them this week.
Considering the trailer was leaked yesterday and the broken boat was added in the game, it seems this has been planned a while and is nothing that is pulled off with a single click of a button.
It’s also inside the War Base editor, possibly because it’s just located there for now and without any functionality.
That’s probably the explanation how they got it into the game without forcing any AppStore/Play Store update.
The teaser and the war base clearly speak against any kind of attack from the seaside, it’s about going somewhere.
Anoushka also stated in the forums that there is no ETA (estimated time of arrival) right now. I’m writing this because yesterday it was rumored that the update will not come until June.
Again, she’s not daying it will be June, but that we shouldn’t believe everything we hear.
There are some exciting days in front of us (if not even weeks). I just hope my hearth hold up and I won’t get a heart attack! XD
Promo Video Leak (May 2nd, 2017)
spAnser managed to leak the new promo video for Clash of Clans. Nothing that interesting in it, but looks good. We’re setting sail! 🙂
I don’t want to go as far to say the sundown in the video is pointing towards nightmode, but it would be a big coincidence if not 🙂
Update: Thanks to cruzo here’s the full video with audio.
And translated they are talking in Japanese:
Hog Rider: Hey everyone, what do you think is on the other side of the sea?
Pig: I don’t know. (proceeds to walk off)
Wizard: First of all, how do we get there?
(they think through their plans)
Hog Rider: Hey Barbarian, do you have any good ideas?
(Barbarian runs into the sea)
Wizard: It looks like we’ll be using a boat.
Pig: That’s right!
And the text at the end just says: “What’s on the other side of the sea?”
Credit for translating goes out to Chief tennababy from Reddit 🙂
Update Gets Polished Off & No Sneak Peeks This Week (May 2nd, 2017)
I have some good news and some bad news for you guys.
The good news is that the update is now finished in terms of features (and bugs are fixed), but there is still some more time needed to get everything in the right place.
Supercell will still need a few more days before they can submit it to the AppStore for review. When this is done, they are ready to give us the Sneak Peeks.
This points me to the bad news, as this step will probably take the next few days. They already stated that there won’t be any Sneak Peeks this week.
However, we already know now that the final steps are taking care of and this means we can hopefully see Sneak Peeks next week (if nothing crazy bad happens in between).
New Troop Leak (Not) (April 30th, 2017)
A new artwork popped up on Reddit and some people just pointed out it’s a new troop:
After a little research, it’s clear that it’s from the official Clash of Clans Website of Korea (see it here), making it neither a real leak nor something new – it’s a Hog Rider (and the website shows a Wizard and a Barbarian as well).
Sneak Peek Leak (April 29th, 2017)
This picture from a Chinese source is going around the internet lately and it looks like either a Sneak Peek or a new loading screen for either the game or the new world we can see when using the ship.
Thanks to Osin for pointing me at this.
As far as I did it get right from people who speak Chinese the picture says:
- a second big world
- night mode
- update never before seen
(if you’re speaking Chinese please let me know in the comments if that is right or not!)
I’m a little surprised about the night mode thing, but please keep in mind that placing the extra text can also be something that somebody added!
Here are also some interesting things I noticed inside the image:
I think the seastar will not a new troop, it’s just there to support the nautic theme.
What’s more interesting is the clan (or other) symbols on the ship, indicating if this new thing is something you will discover alone or with your clan.
In front of the first Barbarian you see something like a skull, but it can also be a random thing that the splashing water creates.
The most important thing I’ve seen is the purple thing the Goblin is standing on that I can absolutely not tell what it is. Galadon used the term “Totem” but I can’t tell if something like Totems will come to Clash of Clans
No Changes Regarding Engineered Bases This Update (April 27th, 2017)
I was researching what Supercell will do about engineered bases and found some interesting evidence (plus official support said that there won’t be a change in this update). Read the full story here:
It’s going to be a May Update…? (April 25th, 2017)
Also, in case you haven’t watched Clash with Ash’s latest video discussing some update stuff, (I recommend you watch) there’s no big news in it, but it is very entertaining.
The part at around 10:20 is very interesting. Here he compares the new update (as a person who already played it) with Clan Wars in terms of the game mode, e.g. by saying that “a lot of people will like it, but still some will prefer Clan Wars…”
Hopefully I’m able to share some new stuff with you very soon.
A little more time needed (April 20th, 2017)
Finally after more than 1 month of total silence, Supercell breaks the silence with the announcement that they are still not quite finished to tell us what’s coming but they seem to be very close to it:
Hey Chief! We know you’re excited to hear more news about the update, but we’re not quite ready yet. It will be much bigger and…
— Clash of Clans (@ClashofClans) April 20, 2017
…we can’t wait to share it with you! We appreciate your patience so stay tuned! Clash On!
— Clash of Clans (@ClashofClans) April 20, 2017
This is supporting my thesis that they have been working on something that changed a lot since the first idea and then turned out to be much bigger than they would have expected.
It’s been the longest time for a new feature update in the history of Clash of Clans, so I hope the new stuff will meet the expectations and bring a lot of cool new stuff.
Now these two tweets are not revealing much except than telling us it’s not ready yet (surprise, otherwise it would have been released), but the official German account on Facebook shared some more details (thanks to Christian for pointing that out on Twitter):
“…different than all other updates before…” makes it extremely interesting in my opinion. We got all kinds of updates in the past years, featuring Clan War, introducing Dark Elixir, new Hero, new Town Halls, changing the way shields work and much more – so, what can be completely different than that?!
New Shipwreck Info & Feature Info? (April 13th, 2017)
Finally something new – I found this artwork going around the internet that clearly shows the ship. It’s very unlikely that this is a photoshop fake since the artwork is very professional and Supercell-like.
Also, the shipwreck in stone here is different from the leaked files we saw (only slightly, but still not the same).
Also, the gamefiles now show something called “Change Village”
The big question now is, what happens when we do this? Will we have another second village, maybe one that we are building together with our clan?
I don’t know how long I can stand this waiting and just want to get some info soon.
By the way, here you can see the whole story behind the shipwreck leaks:
Bugfixing Update (March 13th, 2017)
Some of you may have been surprised this morning with an Update notification for Clash of Clans. I was surprised as well, but this is just a small update to fix bugs & glitches that more than 99% of us didn’t even hear about (and even less were affected by).
This is also an optional update, meaning you can still play the game without having to install.
Maintenance for Balancing Update Finished (March 8th, 2017)
The Maintenance Break for the Update is finished and you won’t need to install any update from the AppStore/Play Store.
The stats of the buffs are here:
So bottom line no real big changes, the Miners and Witches are the only troops that will see a real benefit. In my opinion, Dragon and PEKKA buffs are nothing more than cosmetic and the 15 addition hitpoints for Hog Riders are, with all due to respect, a joke.
The more important part is that War Weights for the War matchmaking have been changed as well, to close the gap between TH9 and TH10! The Witches Level 3 weigh a lot less and upgrading existing X-Bows and Inferno Towers will now also add a lot less weight.
You can find the updated weights here:
Shipwreck News! (March 7th, 2017)
I know many of your thought that the shipwreck would never be coming to Clash of Clans, but just a few hours ago the official Japanese Clash of Clans Twitter account posted their announcement of the Balancing Change for tomorrow:
Do you see the ship in the background? It’s clearly the one we’ve been seeing in the past leaks and it’s not the first time that Supercell did give minor hints in their Japanese Twitter Account.
Read here the full story about the shipwreck:
Balancing Changes & New Air Defense Level (March 7th, 2017)
If you expected some big update info, you might have been surprised when Supercell released that there will be a balancing update in March.
In their defense, they also stated that there will be a bigger update they are still working on which is “coming soon”, so I think this balancing is just to tweak out the game a bit before they release their big update.
It looks like they face some more problems with their big update, so they don’t want to get the pressure higher and higher.
Here’s what we will get:
- NEW: Air defense level 9 (TH 11)
- Air Defense levels 4-8 upgrade cost and time decreased
With high-level air armies gaining traction, it’s finally time to release a VIVIDLY colored TH11 Air Defense.
- Wall level 12 limit increased by 25 (TH11)
More level 12 Walls means more options for defending TH11 layouts!
- Hog Rider levels 5-7 hitpoints increased
- Miner hitpoints increased (all levels)
Whether as first-strike or support units, both Hog Rider and Miner will enjoy some survivability improvements with this HP boost.
- Dragon levels 4-6 damage increased
- P.E.K.K.A levels 3-5 damage increased
The challenging task of getting these high-level power-hitters to your prize target will be all the sweeter with these damage buffs!
- Witch spawning rate increased
A regular member of our balancing updates, the Witch is now getting a boost to what makes her the Witch – spawning skeletons, and LOTS of them.
In my opinion, they are doing nothing unexpected. They are giving those troops a buff that are not used that much and the new Air Defense Level was mandatory with the current air meta at TH11.
The big question so far is WHEN will this balancing update drop? Tomorrow:
The “massive update” they also announced to be “coming soon” will hopefully be announced in March as well. It’s about time 🙂
Developer Answers (February 13th, 2017)
The answers from the Developer Q&A arrived (my opinion below)!
1 & 2) Is there any chance of including something like the Clan Chests in Clash Royale? What are your long term plans for events? We’ll be doing all the single troop/spell events for now. We talked about more “complex” events and even troop combinations for sure, hopefully it’s something we can explore in the near future. Would love to see how those would be received and used by the community
At this point a “Clan Chest”-like feature is not planned, but we surely talked about the possibility of running an event with similar mechanics (to some extent). Not something that we are currently developing at the moment though – as we are totally focused on pumping out a super awesome update.
3) Will you consider adding an option to copy a base?
It’s something we have talked about in the past, but it’s just not on our radar at the moment. Of course we will revisit the idea down the track – but we don’t commit to things that may not come to be.
4) Will anything be done (possibly in the near future) to bring down Hero regeneration time to make them compatible with how long it takes to cook an average army?
As you may remember, we reduced Heroes’ regeneration time by quite a bit back in May 2016. Training times feel overall much better and in sync to us, and at the moment there are no plans to proceed with further reductions in regeneration times.
5)Does Supercell see lopsided bases as a fair and equitable playing style?
“Engineering” is a heated topic and opinions about it are divided.
Are lopsided bases anything we can prevent? If we could, should we do drastic changes? Would players put up with strict restrictions on upgrades to mandate offense-defense balance?
Say we put in a restriction, could the restrictions be balanced to be somewhat more lenient? Where would we draw the line? And if this is a complex line, would we need tools to help players manage their upgrades and understand their restrictions better?
Some cases cannot be prevented even with restrictions. For instance, thinking about launching a new troop, spell, defense or extra buildings at lower Town Hall levels. Doing balancing becomes more difficult, as any bigger rebalance could allow people to break the restrictions.
Without a restriction, what can we do? Keep in mind that we are already doing a lot. As mentioned in the previous Dev Q&A, there is a huge amount of code behind the CW matchmaking that specifically looks for lopsided bases and is designed to mitigate any unfair advantage they might have. This isn’t always obvious to players, because the war map is sorted by defense strength only. However, attack strength is ALWAYS taken into account, and CW matchmaking does all it can to make sure the “books are balanced” overall from top to bottom of a war map, both in terms of attack and defense strength. Of course we can always do better and we will continue to improve this matchmaking very often.
We can’t really prevent them without making extremely complex restrictions that will adversely impact some players and that would require a lot of time and development effort to do right – and even then they might not even work that well in the long term. Instead, we try to improve our matchmaking algorithms to reduce unfair advantages from things like lopsided bases, and we will continue to do so regularly!
To be honest I’m a little disappointed and hoped for a little more clarity. Wrapping these answers up you can say:
- Supercell wants to make more complex events, but doesn’t know when
- Working on a “super awesome” update (heard that before)
- Heroes regeneration won’t be reduced
- Lopsided bases are lopsided bases
So… not that much. I think Supercell will tune the matchmaking algorithm to match lopsided (engineered) bases more against each other. Everything else wouldn’t be possible to do anyways.
More Complex Events (January 30th, 2017)
So far, we’ve seen primarily single troop or spell events, which are nice (and can earn you a lot of resources), but are not very rich in variety.
Now we have seen the first official answer from Supercell where they want to take the events.
The events were introduced in the December 2016 Update and none of us expected that they would be ongoing the way we’ve seen in in the past weeks, so I’m not disappointed so far at all.
However, the Double Star Event or the special Christmas Events have shown how much potential this new feature have. I’m looking forward to how this will develop in the future. 🙂
No Support lower than iOS7 (January 20th, 2017)
Unfortunately, the first official information is bad news. You will need at least iOS7 to get the next Clash of Clans Update via the AppStore, and without getting the update you’ll not be able to play.
With the next coming update to Clash of Clans, we will unfortunately have to end support for all Apple devices running on iOS versions lower than 7.x due to technical reasons beyond our control.
In order to keep playing Clash of Clans, please update to iOS version 7.x (or higher) as soon as possible. You won’t be able to play Clash of Clans unless you have updated to iOS 7.x or higher, or if your device does not support iOS 7.x or higher.
Apple devices which cannot update to iOS7 or higher are:
- iPhone 3G S
- iPod Touch 3rd and 4th generatio
- iPad 1st generation
From what I see, there’s only a small number of people playing on these devices and those who don’t can maybe look forward to smoother graphics and other performance improvements.
If you’re running one of these devices, you can switch your account to another device or continue playing on PC/Mac.
